Josh stared out the window to the rapidly dimming scene outside his window. The ice was already building on the fledgling trees he and Trent planted when they’d moved into the house several years ago. They’d be old men before the trees were big enough to enjoy the shade from them, but right now Josh wasn’t sure there would be more left of their precious trees than kindling.
 
Josh jumped when one of the giant cottonwood trees along the county road lost another branch to the weight. The sound just tightened the knots that already populated Josh’s stomach. Trent was still out in this shit, with both kids.

Aramis took my hand and led me through the French doors on the far side of the sitting room. The snow crunched under my boots, but I wasn’t cold. Evidently, air temperature wasn’t going to affect me as much now I was a vampire. Good. I fucking hate the cold. As we walked to the pool house, I leaned against my mate’s shoulder.

“Are you happy?” he asked me.

“Yes,” I replied quietly.

“But?”

I sighed. “I don’t know. This is all so weird. My life has changed in so many ways and… I mean, I barely know you, and now I’m bound to you forever—literally, forever.”

Even though the wound was healed, his cheek still itched. Kenneth ran his thumb over it, thinking but not saying the words to the aether that would alleviate discomfort. Healing was a basic skill, but in the confusion of being struck he wasn’t sure he had done it correctly. It might still bruise.

 “Are you alright?” Thorn asked. The halls they walked through were dim, the electric lights giving off a droning hum that Kenneth was beginning to think only he could hear. The quiet, though, was appreciated after the throng of people at the duel. The one he had ruined with his ignorance.

 “I’m fine,” he said with a sigh. “Only my pride still hurts.”

He was a little sweatier and a little shakier but he’d made it. Being back on the campus stirred feelings he hadn’t expected, least of them longing—longing to return to a semi-normal life, to live without the fear, to be a student who only cared about getting classes out of the way to have fun and freedom. Kenneth ached to return the favor Thorn had given him in the forest outside the inventor’s college. He could barely focus as he walked past the familiar talentless man who watched the entrance at night, thought of nothing but Thorn as he stabled Jade and took his bags, and wasn’t bothered at all by the dusty scent of the dingy hallways as they walked down to Thorn’s room.

Ussim glared at the surveillance images. The humans were keeping his trophy! Instead of sending Jedd back to him with a message of acceptance, they were sending another of their number. A fighter, if the male’s behavior was consistent with his role. The creature had laid hold of Jedd and threatened him—almost prompting Ussim to burst in and intervene—but the exchange had been too fascinating.
