Sahel: by Larry Benjamin

Waiting for the light to change so I could cross, I stared at the row of dilapidated houses—some with porches newly painted bright colors, others, lacking hope, were shrouded in their original dusty brick and crumbling brownstone—all squeezed together and leaning to the left as if in defiance of the hill on which they sat, which leaned to the right.

The light changed and I hurried across the street. I was practically shaking with fright and excitement. Tonight, I would ask Sahel to marry me. My nerves were as jangly as the wind chimes on the porch. The ring in my pocket seemed to be burning a hole in my pocket.

Myths, Secrets and Love 11: by Elyzabeth M. Valey:

“Say what?”

Arjä laughed.

“They deemed you were honest in your quest and helped. That, Captain, is the map that will lead you toward the man you love.”

Rodric opened his mouth to protest but no words came out. He shuddered as he recalled the heart wrenching desperation he had gone through just thinking that he had never found Fergus. It was time he came to grip with reality. Clearing his throat, he glanced down at the weather-beaten map in his hand.

“Devil’s Island.” He looked up at Arjä, who was staring back at him with twinkling eyes. Rodric scowled.

Uncool – #7: by Tali Spencer:

“I’m serious, Carson. Is this guy trouble?”

How was I supposed to answer that? I didn’t know much of anything about Bradley, not much more than a name. I think I might have met him once, but I couldn’t even remember him.

“Stewart doesn’t seem to think he is.” Lame as it was, that was the best answer I had.

Lenie picked up a cookie and snapped hers in half with an evil grin. “Sounds like Carson needs to conduct a little research.”

“Says the woman who works with mummies.”

“Mummies may not talk, but they say a lot.”

Darkest Before Dawn; by Shelly Schulz:

Bright sunlight streamed in through the open window, and the sound of birds and barking woke her from her sleep. Rose winced, unfolding herself from the ball that she worked herself into sometime during the night. She sat up stretching, joints aching, popping, her back screaming from spending the night on the hard wooden floor. Curious, she rose to her knees, despite her body’s protests and peered out the window, eyes level with the windowsill. The man was gone.

“I had bad dreams last night.” Ben’s voice startled her. Her brother stood in the doorway, sleep rumpled, clutching a blanket.

Toss Up Tuesday: Victoria Adams – Ten Things About Being A Writer

Ten things I’ve learned about being a writer:

1. I’ve learned that I can sit and stare at a blank screen on my laptop for a very long time.

2. I can edit – redit – rewrite then delete the same page three times.

3. I can have conversations – in my head – with my characters and this not be a weird thing. Continue reading

Sunrise: by Victoria Adams:

The pain started small and deep inside his head, but with each breath it grew until J’dol was convinced the top of his head would explode. He groaned and tried to move. His arms refused to obey his command. “Oy, how much did I drink last night?” He raised his right hand to his eyes and was puzzled when his left hand rose also. He hand no time to ponder his hand’s strange behavior as his thigh muscle chose that moment to protest it’s position and cramped. “Ahh! Shit. Can things get any worse?”

My Guardian Angel Is A Cockblocker, CH 1: by Andrew Q. Gordon:

“Are you kidding me?” Alexander Preston jumped up, leaving his text book floating in the air. With the cell phone pressed against his ear, he spun around ignoring the look Nicholas, his guardian angel, gave him. “He asked about me? You’re lying.”

“No, I’m not kidding. Yes, he asked about you. And, no, I’m not lying.” His best friend, Hannah Sherman, sounded almost annoyed. “You two have only been drooling over each other since the semester started.”

“You can’t have a book floating in the air.” Nicholas motioned with his hand and the physics book floated toward the desk. “What if someone walks in?”

Uncool – #3: by Tali Spencer:

“His name is Reed Bradley.”

I’d heard the name, chiefly through the Montiel Foundation my mother and maternal grandparents had funded. I’m on the board. Bradley was listed on the boards of a couple of the arts organizations we supported.

“All right,” I said. This didn’t sound bad so far.

“He knew your father”—my gut turned over a little when Stewart said that—“socially, mostly. Bradley’s self-made. Ambitious and smart. Put himself through Penn, then Wharton, all while building a real estate empire by buying and selling rundown apartment buildings and foreclosed industrial sites. He specializes in high-rises now.”

A New Beginning – Chapter 11: by Andrew Q. Gordon:

“Mr. Secretary,” Griffin said, sounding more like an underling than a cop. “This is Gar.”

The man in his expensive suit walked over and held out his hand. “Good to finally meet you.”

I ignored his hand and kept my eyes on him. I’d started to read his mind when he walked over, but he knew enough to keep his thoughts on anything but the topic at hand. That’s what I get for talking too much and letting people know my secrets.

He kept the hand out and I could feel Griffin’s unease. Too bad. I wasn’t in a polite mood.

Hope – Chapter 12: by Chris T. Kat:

Hope shoved tiles this way and that way, but after five minutes curiosity fled me. He was playing—nothing more, nothing less.

I went over to the dropped boxes and scattered game pieces to collect them. It took me almost a quarter of an hour to clear up the chaos from the floor and stack the games back on their shelves.

“Now come on, Hope. We really need to—” I cut myself off after turning around.

Hope sat on the coffee table, his chest pushed out with obvious pride, and barked. Continue reading
