Don’t Look Back #49 (9.6) by Julie Lynn Hayes

They drew back for a moment, so Lee could make the toast he’d promised. Marshall had to admit he was curious to see how the champagne tasted, but mostly he wanted to hear what Lee had to say. Lee cleared his throat.

“I know I’m not the most eloquent man in the world. I have no real words that are adequate to tell you how much I love you, but I’m going to try. You mean everything to me, Marshall. You are my world and my joy, and I love you with everything I am. I promise that I shall always love you, and I’ll always be there for you. I’ll stand beside you, no matter what, for the rest of our days together, may they be many. I give to you all I am, now and forever.”

Double Trouble: Chapter 38 by Jon Keys

Darren started slightly when the back door slammed hard enough to rattle the framed photographs on his desk. Great, more drama. He sat back, knowing he was going to be dragged into the never-ending war. Just as he’d feared, Ben appeared in the doorway.
“I don’t have to put up with this shit! I’m not your fucking servant.”
Darren put his pen on the desk with an audible click and swiveled his chair to meet Ben’s angry expression.
“What are you talking about? No one is treating you bad.”

A River Rendezvous by Avery Dawes

Despite the throbbing in his leg, Will shambled down to the shore, a towel slung over his left shoulder, a cup of coffee gripped in his right hand. His newly constructed bungalow had weathered last night’s wicked storms well, taking the abuse of the high winds and torrential rain with all the ease of a conditioned submissive—bowed, but not broken.

Will dried off the Adirondack chair and slid into the seat, sipping his steaming cup of java. A thin layer of fog shrouded the bay, muffling everything but the sound of the water lapping against the shore. He’d only lived on Maryland’s Eastern Shore for two months, but this had been the most peaceful time of his life. He kept waiting to miss the camaraderie of his SEAL Team brothers, but after his last tour in the sandbox, he’d had enough. The medical discharge only cemented the fact his military career was over. Nothing like having a semi-bionic leg. Grateful the doctors had saved his limb, he now wondered if having a prosthetic would be less painful than having one filled with an assortment of titanium plates and rods.

Don’t Look Back #43 (8.4) by Julie Lynn Hayes

The half-made breakfast plans were shelved. No one was in the mood to go to Milly’s now. They loaded the gear in the back of the truck and headed home instead. Once they’d unpacked, Roy volunteered to make coffee, so Marshall and Lee headed into the family room. They sat together on the couch. Lee held Marshall’s hand tightly, and Marshall welcomed the firm grip, afraid if Lee let go, he’d fall apart.

Marshall was already struggling to hold himself together as it was. Every fear he’d ever had was attempting to manifest itself. They were all connected, in some way, with the loss of Lee. But he was damned if he was going to ever cry because of her again.

Don’t Look Back #40 (8.1) by Julie Lynn Hayes

Marshall slowly swam to consciousness. The chitter of birds and rustle of branches over his head were his first clues morning was upon them. Lee’s arm, draped around his torso, was warm and comfortable, their bodies spooned together in the oversized sleeping bag they used when they slept outdoors. Marshall burrowed against Lee, content to lie there. More than two weeks had passed since Thanksgiving, and his fears had begun to recede. They’d spent yesterday quail hunting and decided to stay the night out by the pond, where they’d cooked the birds they shot and made love beneath the stars.

Something niggled at the back of Marshall’s brain, , and it threatened to drive him crazy. There was something he’d left undone. He knew it was nothing as stupid as leaving the stove on, or forgetting to turn off a faucet. That was all too ingrained in him to even be a consideration. So what could it be?

FOOL FOR LOVE by L.M. Brown

April the first, also known as April Fools Day, was one of Liam’s favourite days to work. The previous year it had fallen on a Sunday and had been something of a disappointment. On working days, however, his normally fairly quiet office turned into a building full of pranksters.  You had to check every chair before you sat down as well as ensuring you didn’t leave any unattended mugs of coffee around. Fake spiders in the bottom of them were common place, as were other equally delightful surprises. Even the IT department joined in on the fun …

Love Across Time: Chapter 40 by Jim Dunaway

I thought I knew everyone who worked for the TPC. I don’t recognize this man at all the head Magistrate thought. “Who are you and what is your business here?

Not knowing how to address the head Magistrate, Ethan thought better safe than sorry. “Your Honor, my name is Ethan Evans.” A low murmur broke out among those witnessing the proceedings. Everyone in the Timeline Preservation Commission knew that name, but few had ever met him.

“I am here to plead on behalf of Ryan Edwards,” he began.

“Your name is not unknown to us. You are from the past.”

Aesthetics of Invention: Part 22 by Ravon Silvius

Thorn’s heart began to pound, his blood buzzing in his ears even as the realization hit him, despair replacing the shock.

George had seen them both at the fair. He had seen them at the mess hall, after Thorn had placed his bag back in his room.

Surely he wouldn’t. It was petty, stupid, something only the most mean-spirited person would do. A boy at the orphanage had been like that, angry and vengeful to the other children. Thorn had never learned why.

“Thorn, what…” Kenneth moved in front of him, his robes swishing as he stalked toward the door.  The metal hinges creaked as he pushed it open further. George hadn’t completely broken it, at least. It would be an easy fix.

“The little automaton…” Kenneth’s voice wavered.

The Hollow: Soul Seekers by JC Wallace

When no one spoke, Levi continued. “That’s why I stopped the meds. I thought they were causing me to feel nothing but…” The empty lonely echoing within him had continued.

“But it didn’t help.” Dr. Winston finished Levi’s thought. “Oh, Levi. This just keeps getting stranger. I know this is a lot to take in at once.”

More than he could have ever imagine. Levi looked down at the bloody tissue. Blood covered his palm as well “Can I use the bathroom?” He could only imagine what his face looked like.

Dr. Winston nodded. “The door behind Jeb.”

Double Trouble: Chapter 27by Jon Keys

The early spring sunshine felt good against Josh’s bare skin. The slight heat warmed his skin and chased the last of the winter chill from his system. He stretched his arms above his head and grinned to see Trent coming around the corner as bare chested as he was. But Trent didn’t have to be as careful about sunburn with his darker complexion. He pushed the wheelbarrow beside the garden they were about to tackle. Trent glanced up, caught his eye and grinned.
“What are you up to?”
