A terrible sense of foreboding…A bang woke Tom. He jumped up wildly, looking around for the source of the noise, until he realized his water cup had fallen off the shelf. What time was it? He didn’t even remember falling asleep.

     Tom shook off sleepiness, hunger gnawing at his stomach. It must be close to dinner, then. Hopefully safe to exit the room. Tom hoped Nathan was alright. That old man had seemed so cruel.

  As Tom made his way down the hall, he was struck again by a strange dread, and suddenly his throat felt tight.

Nathan scoffed when Tom didn’t answer immediately. “Fine. I can make it on my own.” He got to his feet, and Tom could not help but notice Nathan’s shakiness. He leaned on the wall for support, his head down as though he fought off dizziness. Tom immediately felt bad for delaying.

     “Okay, let me help. I’m…sorry.” He didn’t quite know what he was apologizing for, but he knew Nathan needed help. Tom wished Nathan would tell him what was going on. Maybe if Tom helped, he would tell.

Mitch dug out one of the huge glass tumblers he and Darrin had collected somewhere through their life together. But he wanted a glass that was going to take a lot of time to empty. He also didn’t want one of the flimsy plastic pieces of shit either. Mitch wanted a nice thick hefty glass made out of—well glass damnit. So if I decide to have an ugly fit and throw the glass into the stone fireplace it would break into a thousand satisfying fragments.
Not that he would ever do that. Mitch had pulled that stunt once during their marriage, and the relationship had barely survived. Mitch had never seen Darrin so pissed off before then or after. Mild mannered polite Darrin had went bat shit crazy on Mitch’s ass.

 Tom huddled by the door. He considered running again, and then wondered if he should climb over the deck. Swimming didn’t scare him. But then, there was Nathan…

      “The deck!” the boy shouted, and Tom froze. He should have run while he had the chance.

The Secret Sanctuary: Part 5 by Johayan

The mysterious Chris appointment started my day at 9am, then lunch at 11:30, then covering the desk for the afternoon. Not a bad day until 4:30pm when I had to deal with Kate getting arrested for the massive fraud she had been committing for the two years.

The criminal charges had already been filed and mountains of paperwork sent via courier to my lawyer as supporting evidence.

I looked at the clock on the desk and saw it was already 8:15. With a client at 9, I realized I should find some breakfast and get ready for the day.

Danny stepped into the entryway and stopped to listen. He’d been surprised when he’d pulled into the parking in front of the house. It almost never happened that he had any privacy. He and Rob hooked up more often at his house because Rob’s older sister was away at college and both of his parents worked in town. So there was a lot less chance of someone interrupting their fun. 
But this time he had some time alone, which almost never happened. At least he thought everyone was gone. But he had no intention of doing anything without checking the house to make sure. He worked his way through the living room and kitchen. So far so good.

Trent sat tapping his pencil against the table Josh had made for him a few years earlier. He thought it was one of their early anniversary gifts. Josh had gone to a lot of trouble with the details. Most of the wood was dark from stain but inlayed blond pieces added a level of meticulous craftsmanship that Trent appreciated.

But Trent was only distracting himself from the conversation he needed to have with Josh, about Danny. He’d got up last night to check on a noise he thought he’d heard and happened on Danny and Rob getting off.

 “Son of a bitch! Ritch, hide!” I jerked my arms and the cuffs busted through the cheap wood. Ritch bolted upright and then scooted backward off his bed and into the corner. “Where the fuck is the key?”No time. I jumped off the bed, fighting with the sheet. In seconds the attacker was on me. I fought back, using my cuffed arms to grab the back of his neck and yank his head down onto my rising knee. He yowled and raked my sides with sharp claws.I held back my own cry and fought with my teeth clenched.
