An Offer I Could Not Refuse: Part 16 by Michael Mandrake

The moment I sensed my father’s spirit in the room, I jerked awake. I turned to the left, staring into the weary brown eyes of the man everyone had told me I’d resembled. Now, I looked nothing like Jacob Winston. Though our facial features were similar, I had fangs and claws. Traits that Jacob and the entire Winston family hated. Though they hadn’t tried to revolt recently, the spirit was still there. My clan had always had the feeling we would one day rise again.

“Not now.”

“No, I won’t allow it,” I said to him.

“How could you? My youngest child. The one I held in my arms only days before I was murdered? If anything, you should be angrier than your older brothers and sisters? Why have you betrayed me?”

Hearing his sad words, I closed my eyes tight. “Though I am sorry for hurting you, I will not apologize for what I’ve done. I fell in love…”

“Maybe the hunters were a coincidence,” Meg offered. “I mean just because if they were working for Cheryl they wouldn’t have blown up the cave. The cave in would have killed Fran and then Cheryl wouldn’t be able to use her.”

Kitryn nodded thoughtfully. “I think we need to work on the assumption they are working together until it’s proved otherwise. It wouldn’t do to discount the hunters and then have them appear out of nowhere when we least expect them.”

They all agreed and Meg said she was going to try and see what gossip she could pick up amongst the females of the den.

I curled up on the edge of the couch, my head on Captain’s thigh. I felt better when we were touching. He crafted messages that seemed completely normal, until he showed me the code he used with his contacts. Then I could decipher the hidden messages inside them requesting more information on the current council and political maneuvering among the military.

 Ryan turned his gaze toward his stepmother. Cassie was Dad’s third wife. Widow now. Ryan’s mother, who’d died when Ryan was an infant, had been the first Mrs. Fremont. And Dad’s second wife, Liza, had disappeared years ago, vanished without a trace. Along with his stepbrother, Ben. He’d hoped they would show up today—whether to pay their respects or simply acknowledge his dad’s passing, he couldn’t say—but that hadn’t happened. Maybe he shouldn’t have been surprised. He hadn’t heard a word from either of them in ten years. The last time his dad had been in contact was when he’d gotten the divorce papers signed, and even that was done through his lawyer, nothing direct.

Cassie’s head was bent, her eyes closed. Maybe she was praying.  Ryan sighed. Prayers never seemed to do any good, so why bother? Hadn’t gotten him anywhere today. He’d prayed to be able to see Ben. See how well that had worked out.

“When will Daddy be here?” Eight-year-old Ryan Fremont turned  impatiently away from the living room window. He’d been practically glued to the spot ever since lunch, and only left when his babysitter shooed him away and told him to go play or watch TV. Mrs. Windom was also his next-door neighbor, and she’d been watching Ryan as long as he could remember—after school, and sometimes evenings and weekends. Normally, he was a very obedient charge, but today he was too excited to listen. Daddy was bringing him a surprise, and Ryan knew exactly what it was going to be.

A puppy! A little dog of his very own. That was the only thing in the world Ryan wanted, so what else could it be, right?
