“She think I should be hers. She had papa first. Mama took him. She got sent away.”

Simon and Kitryn swung their attention to her.

“Who’s Cheryl?” Simon asked.

Kitryn was the one to answer. “She was the lover of my sister’s mate before they met.

 Ryan turned his gaze toward his stepmother. Cassie was Dad’s third wife. Widow now. Ryan’s mother, who’d died when Ryan was an infant, had been the first Mrs. Fremont. And Dad’s second wife, Liza, had disappeared years ago, vanished without a trace. Along with his stepbrother, Ben. He’d hoped they would show up today—whether to pay their respects or simply acknowledge his dad’s passing, he couldn’t say—but that hadn’t happened. Maybe he shouldn’t have been surprised. He hadn’t heard a word from either of them in ten years. The last time his dad had been in contact was when he’d gotten the divorce papers signed, and even that was done through his lawyer, nothing direct.

Cassie’s head was bent, her eyes closed. Maybe she was praying.  Ryan sighed. Prayers never seemed to do any good, so why bother? Hadn’t gotten him anywhere today. He’d prayed to be able to see Ben. See how well that had worked out.

He’d been practically glued to the spot ever since lunch, and only left when his babysitter shooed him away and told him to go play or watch TV. At the stroke of midnight, Owen was pacing the banks of the lake. He checked his watch for the hundredth time to find time crawling so slowly it might have been going backwards. The light of the phone was harsh in darkness lit only by an occasional glimmer of a pale moon, as it dodged between clouds. Gage stumbled into the kitchen, lifted a coffee cup from the dish drainer and poured himself a cup of the strong brew he and Ben setup every night so it would be ready when they woke the next morning. The aroma of coffee curled around him as he filled his cup with the dark liquid. He mixed in the sugar and cream he liked until the drink matched the color of milk chocolate.
He lifted the cup and sipped at the steaming liquid. The heat washed down his throat and infused through him along with caffeine. Gage revealed in the sensation with his eyes half closed. Meg insisted everyone call her grandma and by the time the kits woke up from their nap Simon was fully up to date.

Simon sighed. “So, we have a rogue witch to worry about. As well as hunters and maybe the vamp who changed me. Have I missed anyone?”

Kitryn shook his head while dishing up the kits’ food. “No, that sounds about right. We need to work out a plan. My group may be gone, but what if this witch targets other shifters or paranormals? And we need to make sure the hunters haven’t managed to track us at all.
