Tales of the Cabin – Part 1 by Johayan

It was another mindless day in the cube farm. At most other companies, I’d have an office.  Not a corner suite, but an office none the less.  As I looked at my schedule for the rest of the week, all I saw was meeting after meeting.  I was glad I was going on vacation in a couple of weeks.

While I enjoy my job, it’s not the most intellectually stimulating job.  The only excitement was the breaking news that someone had purchased a winning lottery ticket at the convenience store in the lobby.

“Maybe the hunters were a coincidence,” Meg offered. “I mean just because if they were working for Cheryl they wouldn’t have blown up the cave. The cave in would have killed Fran and then Cheryl wouldn’t be able to use her.”

Kitryn nodded thoughtfully. “I think we need to work on the assumption they are working together until it’s proved otherwise. It wouldn’t do to discount the hunters and then have them appear out of nowhere when we least expect them.”

They all agreed and Meg said she was going to try and see what gossip she could pick up amongst the females of the den.

“Quick, call an ambulance!” the barmaid called as she tried to stem the flow of blood bubbling around the embedded shard of glass.

“What happened?” someone shouted.

“Where’s my drink?” another slurred voice called.

“Let me through,” a strong voice demanded. “I’m a healer move.”

The crowd parted and Jamie dropped to his knees by the bleeding man.

“What happened?” he asked as he started running a diagnosing spell.

“Greg was reaching for a whiskey bottle on the top shelf. The shelf must have been loose coz it fell. The bottles smashed and a shard buried itself in his chest.

After having finished their cake and pronounced it delicious, the four men headed toward the door. Lee extended an invitation to dinner the following night. For both of them.

“You should take him up on that,” Marshall said with a grin. “He’s gonna barbecue.”

Roy patted his stomach. “I never turn down good food, especially not Lee’s que. Guess we’ll see you then.” He held the check for their table in one hand. Lee had tried to claim it when the waitress brought it, but Roy had been too quick for him.

The four men took a booth together back in the corner. Dustin found himself sitting next to Roy on one side, Marshall and Lee across from them. Nobody stared at him, but he knew they had to have questions. Luckily, Roy took the lead. Once they’d placed their orders with the waitress, he explained what was going on, beginning with the burglaries in Tucker Falls, and ending with Jordan’s probable involvement.

“This guy is real bad news,” Roy said. “A real asshole. He needs to be put away for a long long time.”

“Wow,” Marshall said. “That is unreal. Are you okay, Dustin?”

Byron Kendall: Part 2 by Johayan

We were camped on the edge of a small river and had been enjoying fresh lake trout for dinner.  Several of adults, including dad, were sitting around camp having a few beers and bullshitting.  Me, my older cousin Jerry, and a bunch of the younger cousins decided we were going to go swimming and exploring til evening. We hiked up the river a mile or two and decided we’d hang out there. We had a helluva time swimming, which beats being in camp sweating yer balls off, but it was getting dark enough that we decided we should head back to camp.

Males came pouring out of the clan house. The betas were big, but from what Ritch said, they were bullies. I knew how to deal with bullies. I traded blows with the first to reach me, pain exploding in my jaw as he got in a punch before I could duck below it, but he missed with the second. I crouched and surged upward, striking in a sharp uppercut that knocked him backwards. He stumbled and fell, down for the count.

I snarled when someone came from the side, hoping to catch me unaware. “Nice try, fucker.”

Dustin raised a groggy head and eyed the alarm clock on Jordan’s side of the bed through slitted eyes, then lay back down. Still early. He didn’t have to be at work for hours. He could spend more time with Jordan.  Maybe even go another round before he had to take a shower and get dressed.

Ever since they started dating, Dustin spent more nights at Jordan’s place than he did at home. Every time he talked about going back to the apartment he shared with Denver, Jordan would turn big puppy dog eyes on him, and his lower lip would quiver slightly… and then there were his hands. Jordan had the most amazing touch, and he seemed to like to touch Dustin whenever and wherever possible.

Mitch dug out one of the huge glass tumblers he and Darrin had collected somewhere through their life together. But he wanted a glass that was going to take a lot of time to empty. He also didn’t want one of the flimsy plastic pieces of shit either. Mitch wanted a nice thick hefty glass made out of—well glass damnit. So if I decide to have an ugly fit and throw the glass into the stone fireplace it would break into a thousand satisfying fragments.
Not that he would ever do that. Mitch had pulled that stunt once during their marriage, and the relationship had barely survived. Mitch had never seen Darrin so pissed off before then or after. Mild mannered polite Darrin had went bat shit crazy on Mitch’s ass.
