I was tempted to irk Garjah by testing the material around Bouncer’s feet. It was molded to his feet like a second skin. I’d seen the same thing holding liquid in the front of the hold, and it was flexible. I had to assume it was to prevent any of the poison they said was in his claws from coming out. Or did he inject it. The curiosity almost made me pick up his front leg and press on the pad, but Garjah’s hovering prevented it.

Mr. Mosely huffed and the glow dissipated. “Do you know what he looked like when I found him? He had a glamour on, but it was no trouble for me to see through it.” An image shimmered in the air over the counter, and suddenly Mica was looking at a revolving image of Owen’s head. He gasped at the black bruises around both Owen’s eyes. His cheek was sunken in—it could have been broken. The image panned down, and Mica saw Owen’s arm was at a wrong angle and one of his fingers was so swollen Mica doubted Owen would have been able to use it.

awyer decided to avoid commenting on Jimmy not needing directions to his home. His safe, sensible car waited for him next to Jada’s SUV as Jimmy’s truck pulled into the driveway. The modest ranch kept its tidy appearance with short evergreen shrubs this deep into fall, and he noted there were more leaves to rake, marking the coming end of the yard-care season he loved so much. The white pine sapling he’d planted the week after they bought the house seven years ago had grown into a child-sized Christmas tree. Given time, it would dwarf the house, reaching into the sky.

Garjah pressed a spot on the straps and they retracted smoothly. What had he pushed? I didn’t see any button but I could have been free that easy? Not that there was anywhere to go. I didn’t see a way to open the door from the inside either, and the room was small.  

I sat up immediately and hissed as my feet touched the floor. They were bare and the pulse of an engine vibrating through the metal disturbed me. “Are we still moving?”  

“Yes, but you are awake now so Timok wants me to take you for a meal.”

Jimmy’s wolf refused to stop pacing. If it had been loose, its claws would be leaving shavings all over the wood floors. Instead, it prowled restless and frustrated in his head, and for a change, Jimmy wasn’t the focus of its ire.

No, his wolf wanted to rend Fergus’s throat into bloody strips when he altered the parameters of their agreement. Jimmy had gone above and beyond, proving his worth in a way no other wolf would ever be asked to be part of a pack. It wasn’t his fault Fergus’s pack had some infighting. He didn’t care about any of that.

Fergus had been barely able to sit still since Jimmy called.

“I have the rogue. Meet me in an hour.”

Other than a meeting place, the cryptic call had been cut short. Normally, Fergus would have been put off by the brusque disconnection, but the excitement won over. Months of waiting for Jimmy to complete his mission and bring the rogue wolf to him would finally be over. He’d been starting to worry it might never end. Tying up the loose end would go a long way to easing his nights.

Waiting in his truck on the side of the forgotten stretch of dirt road, Fergus checked his phone for the umpteenth time.

It was the feet. Those broad soles and flat toes digging into the earth were made to move soundlessly. And the subtle green striping would probably help the creature to blend in amazingly with the foliage around us, if he wanted to.  

Based on the way he stood, feet spread apart and four arms braced, two on the torso and two outward facing me, he wasn’t hiding at all. The planet did not have any structures or even ruins that indicated an advanced civilization or culture; nothing to show manufacturing or building.  

No way to cover up making the textile

He was trotting along ahead of me, weaving through bushes I had to hack a path through, when his rigid stance caught my eye. “What is it, boy?” I spoke quietly to avoid spooking him or alerting whatever had caused his alarm.

“I can’t read this tonight.”

With a beleaguered sigh, Sawyer tossed the paperback on the end table. The prose was questionable, the plot barely existent, and he only purchased it because the swarthy pirate on the cover reminded him of Jimmy.

“You’re so sad, Sawyer.” He didn’t usually talk to himself, but the empty house felt abnormally hollow this evening.

Jada had left for her pottery class over an hour ago. Or was it her yoga class night? For the life of him, he couldn’t remember her schedule. Ugh, he’d been such a lousy husband. No wonder she’d wanted out.

“You didn’t have to come all this way just to say hello.”

The gleam in Sawyer’s eyes told Jimmy he wasn’t complaining about the surprise visit. The bank’s lobby was currently devoid of customers, but he knew that wouldn’t last, so his time was limited. The other employees, however, were present, and a few were taking a vested interest in their conversation. It kept Jimmy from ravishing Sawyer in public. While he might not have cared what others thought, his mate would not appreciate being mauled into a breathless mess in front of his coworkers. The few kisses he’d stolen since meeting Sawyer’s mother before the full moon had hardly quenched his thirst.
