At the stroke of midnight, Owen was pacing the banks of the lake. He checked his watch for the hundredth time to find time crawling so slowly it might have been going backwards. The light of the phone was harsh in darkness lit only by an occasional glimmer of a pale moon, as it dodged between clouds. He’d almost broken his neck a half-dozen times on the path over the mountain. He’d almost turned back a dozen more, but here he was, phone in hand, watching the numbers march onward to his doom.

Roy’s life had taken a complete one-eighty—and he couldn’t be happier about it. He’d begun to think he would never find someone to love, to have what Lee and Marshall had. And then, out of nowhere, when he wasn’t looking, it happened.  The trouble was he’d been searching for Miss Right all this time when it was actually Mr. Right, in the guise of Dustin Johnson.  If someone had suggested to Roy just a few months ago that he could fall in love with a man, he’d have laughed and said that wasn’t him, not that he had anything against the idea of two men being together. And yet just look at him now. He was with another man, and loving it.

He guessed the right person made all the difference, and gender didn’t really matter.

Gage stumbled into the kitchen, lifted a coffee cup from the dish drainer and poured himself a cup of the strong brew he and Ben setup every night so it would be ready when they woke the next morning. The aroma of coffee curled around him as he filled his cup with the dark liquid. He mixed in the sugar and cream he liked until the drink matched the color of milk chocolate.
He lifted the cup and sipped at the steaming liquid. The heat washed down his throat and infused through him along with caffeine. Gage revealed in the sensation with his eyes half closed. He walked toward Alec with the intent of waking him for breakfast. As he reached down, he couldn’t help but see the dried remains of his orgasm.

The sun had disappeared behind the western horizon and the first of the cicada began their nightly chorus. After downing more than his share of handcrafted beers, plus a few of Ben’s concoctions, Alec felt the effects of his evening. He’d stayed until late playing cards and by then he was far too drunk to make it home. Eli and Cullen had left hours before, leaving the trio to deal with each other.
Ben put away the deck of cards and studied Alec before beginning to chuckle when Alec rose on wobbly legs. “You ain’t going nowhere. You’re completely shit faced.”

Simon sighed. “So, we have a rogue witch to worry about. As well as hunters and maybe the vamp who changed me. Have I missed anyone?”

Kitryn shook his head while dishing up the kits’ food. “No, that sounds about right. We need to work out a plan. My group may be gone, but what if this witch targets other shifters or paranormals? And we need to make sure the hunters haven’t managed to track us at all.

The Sheriff #53 (13.1) by Julie Lynn Hayes

The parking lot of the old Hamilton factory was completely empty, the building long vacant. The owners had packed up years ago and left town. A forlorn For Sale sign was staked into the ground, giving the name of a local realtor. A few of the windows were broken, probably by kids with nothing better to do than test their skills at rock throwing.

Which made this an ideal location for dealing with Jordan, once and for all.

Now, how to diffuse the situation so that no one got hurt. Roy decided to draw on his knowledge of human nature, garnered over many years as a private investigator and then lawman. To calculate what that asshole might do.

At first, Roy hadn’t thought anything of there being a car behind them. To be safe, he kept an eye on it. The vehicle never turned off, maintaining a steady distance between them. Roy decided to test a sudden apprehension and switched lanes. The other car did the same. And when Roy moved back to his original lane, so did the strange vehicle.

He felt Dustin’s hand on his leg tremble slightly. He started to tell him not to worry, but his common sense said they should be worried. If this was Jordan, as he feared, there was no telling what he might do.

Dustin sat so close to Roy that their legs touched intimately. Roy’s presence was comforting, after the harrowing events of the evening. The way he’d come charging in to the computer store, like a white knight to the rescue… well, that made Dustin’s heart beat faster every time he thought about it. And now here they were, together, along with Denver, eating slingers and having a good time.

Dustin had let Roy explain about Jordan, and what he had tried to force him into doing, afraid his cousin would blame him for being stupid. But Denver never spoke a single word of criticism. In fact, he was completely supportive, to Dustin’s relief.
