Phases of Moon: Part 46 by J. Alan Veerkamp

Jimmy’s wolf refused to stop pacing. If it had been loose, its claws would be leaving shavings all over the wood floors. Instead, it prowled restless and frustrated in his head, and for a change, Jimmy wasn’t the focus of its ire.

No, his wolf wanted to rend Fergus’s throat into bloody strips when he altered the parameters of their agreement. Jimmy had gone above and beyond, proving his worth in a way no other wolf would ever be asked to be part of a pack. It wasn’t his fault Fergus’s pack had some infighting. He didn’t care about any of that.

Phases of Moon: Part 44 by J. Alan Veerkamp

Fergus had been barely able to sit still since Jimmy called.

“I have the rogue. Meet me in an hour.”

Other than a meeting place, the cryptic call had been cut short. Normally, Fergus would have been put off by the brusque disconnection, but the excitement won over. Months of waiting for Jimmy to complete his mission and bring the rogue wolf to him would finally be over. He’d been starting to worry it might never end. Tying up the loose end would go a long way to easing his nights.

Waiting in his truck on the side of the forgotten stretch of dirt road, Fergus checked his phone for the umpteenth time.

Ancalagon: Chapter Ten by Cia Nordwell

It was the feet. Those broad soles and flat toes digging into the earth were made to move soundlessly. And the subtle green striping would probably help the creature to blend in amazingly with the foliage around us, if he wanted to.

Based on the way he stood, feet spread apart and four arms braced, two on the torso and two outward facing me, he wasn’t hiding at all. The planet did not have any structures or even ruins that indicated an advanced civilization or culture; nothing to show manufacturing or building.

No way to cover up making the textile

Ancalagon Chapter Eight; by Cia Nordwell

He was trotting along ahead of me, weaving through bushes I had to hack a path through, when his rigid stance caught my eye. “What is it, boy?” I spoke quietly to avoid spooking him or alerting whatever had caused his alarm.

A loud blast overhead sent me into a crouch at his side. He was belly down flat to the earth, his ears folded flat and head swinging wildly.

What was that? We’d walked most of the day. I’d observed several insects, but for all his ability to walk far quieter than I could, the prey animals must have

Phases of Moon: Part 38 by J. Alan Veerkamp

“I can’t read this tonight.”

With a beleaguered sigh, Sawyer tossed the paperback on the end table. The prose was questionable, the plot barely existent, and he only purchased it because the swarthy pirate on the cover reminded him of Jimmy.

“You’re so sad, Sawyer.” He didn’t usually talk to himself, but the empty house felt abnormally hollow this evening.

Jada had left for her pottery class over an hour ago. Or was it her yoga class night? For the life of him, he couldn’t remember her schedule. Ugh, he’d been such a lousy husband. No wonder she’d wanted out.

Unicorn Quests: Chapter Forty-one by Cia Nordwell

The smoke enveloped me. Gray lightened to white then faded to an opaque background. My breath caught in my chest.

“What is this?”

No one had said there would be magic during the release. My heart thundered in my chest and my breath sawed in and out. “No, no, no…”

I’d barely held it together when I changed form. It was only the need to keep the ceremony going, and knowing exactly what to do that kept me focused.

Not on me, but what I had to do for Wenn’s spirit.

“And I thank you for that.”

I spun and

Unicorn Quests: Chapter Sixteen by Cia Nordwell

Walking over the mountain wasn’t the best idea with two foals—one wounded—but it was better than going backward toward the cave and trolls. I wanted to stay as far away from the road near where the cave had been as possible. Who knew if the beasts had other partners who would come for the kidnapped Beings?

There had to have been a reason they’d taken so many. Humans caught Beings, especially young ones, in order to kill them in their attempts to purify the planet. They killed them.

They didn’t do whatever the boss, or master, or whoever-the-hell

Super Trooper #3 (1.3) by Julie Lynn Hayes

The rest of Evan’s workday had passed in a sort of strange haze. He was lucky it was a light day, as far as his duties went, mostly traffic citations and warnings. A lot of people didn’t realize that the Texas State troopers did more than patrol the highways, lying in wait for speeders.  They often served as law enforcement for small rural areas who didn’t have their own sheriffs, and also helped out with some of the smaller towns as well. Courtesy, Service, Protection was the motto of the Department of Public Safety, of which the troopers were a part, and Evan took those words very seriously.

But today had been different. Today his second brain had been too fully engaged for his liking, and he couldn’t get the handsome man

Super Trooper #2 (1.2) by Julie Lynn Hayes

The instant he uttered the fateful words, he regretted them. This was not him. He never spoke harshly to anyone, much less a figure of authority such as this man. He was always respectful and polite. But he couldn’t do anything about it now. With any luck, perhaps the trooper hadn’t noticed his surly tone. Or would be so used to hearing such rudeness from the drivers he pulled over that he would not think it anything out of the ordinary. He trained his eyes on his steering wheel, wishing the ground would open up and swallow him whole. He would be late to work for sure now.

“Step out of the vehicle!” a deep voice commanded, breaking into his unhappy thoughts.

Adrift: Chapter 76 by J. Alan Veerkamp

Nothing short of a plasma torch could release him from Shichi’s steel grip, yet Arad cursed and thrashed until they crossed the border of the infirmary. When no one stopped inside the lines for decontamination, Arad freaked. His feet flailed out recklessly, kicking over a tray of instruments. Only when Shichi slammed him onto a bed hard enough to force the wind out of his lungs did he stop yelling.

“Be quiet or I’ll have Shichi remove your tongue. You don’t need it to keep Roku’s imprinting instinct in check.” Bryce tapped at the bed’s controls near his right hand and restraints spun out…
