Evan’s request for a day off was quickly given, luckily. Otherwise, he wasn’t sure what he would have done. After getting off the phone with his supervisor, he slid it into his pocket and returned to the kitchen. Kamal was just finishing his pancakes. He looked up from his plate, giving Evan an inquisitive glance as he searched for something or someone.

“Denise can’t come today. She doesn’t feel well,” Evan explained.

“Oh,” Kamal said. “Is Mandy coming then?”

Daylight breaking through the tree canopy teased Jimmy out of a solid sleep. Blinking, he forced out the grogginess as the world came into focus. The room was unfamiliar, but the man in Jimmy’s arms was not.

Blankets up to his nose, Sawyer slept like the dead, not even registering Jimmy’s movements. He hadn’t recalled Sawyer dozing so soundly since the night of Irwin’s attack. Jimmy drew the covers down, exposing Sawyer’s shoulder. Pink and freshly healed, a bite scar left a neat ring in the meat of the muscle. The garish rows left behind by Irwin’s jaws had been wiped clean from Sawyer’s skin.

Bouncer’s hide was no comparison to my face when I finished reading. It was exactly what I’d thought it would be. Pair-bonding was sexual. Genetics played a huge role, but from everything I read, it was emotional as well.  

Was Garjah emotional? I leaned back against the bed. He didn’t say much, but he took care of me. He brought me food. Made sure I had Bouncer. He’d pinched his slim nostrils shut and glared at Bouncer on the bed when he brought the midday meal, but he hadn’t said anything.
