When the first set ended, the band took a break and the dance club switched to a computerized music system. Ryan expected Ben to take a seat at the table he was sharing with Marge and relax before the next set, but apparently Ben had other ideas. Standing in front of Ryan, he reached for his hand as he swung his hips to the rhythm of the music that surged around them.
“C’mon, baby, let’s you and me shake it up a little!’
How could Ryan refuse such an invitation? He couldn’t.

“Bryce isn’t eating with us?” The spicy aroma made Arad’s stomach growl as he took a conservative scoop of noodles from the serving bowl. The Nightingale either had a much better food selection or a proper cook. Maybe both.
“Don’t take it personal. She prefers her own space.” Seated next to Hodge, Yosei poured water into cups from a plastic pitcher.
Bryce’s voice hovered out of the ceiling. “But I do like to join the conversation.”
“And her decontamination protocols.” Sarcasm dripped from Yosei’s words, but her cups didn’t spill a drop as she passed them around the table to Roku, Arad, and the rest of the crew.

“Stay calm,” Danie said. “Freska won’t let him in.”
“What makes you think he’s going to ask permission?” I had to hide Chomper. I had to get more weapons. All the weapons. I’d left our quarters with just two. It felt like enough on the ship when I’d had time, seconds that would stretch out as long as I needed them to, it had seemed.
But the prey we’d been chasing had turned on us and now we were caught. I shuddered, or maybe that was my chair as another blast rocked the ship. “Chomper, go hide. Like we said.”
