The temperature had dropped a little as the three of us filed down the porch stairs, careful to be quiet in deference to those sleeping inside.

“Let’s go this way.” Ethan nodded toward one side of the house, and we followed his head, eyeing our surroundings very carefully. I knew agents were watching our every movements. Sure enough, Anderson’s ring tone sounded from Ethan’s phone. He quickly answered and explained what we were doing and then hung up. Good to know someone was concerned enough to find out if everything was kosher.

My heart warmed when Ethan’s mother included me in such a way. And then I realized she’d actually spoken for her husband as well, at least as far as accepting Troy’s generous invitation. Maybe things had changed for the better here, at least as far as they were concerned. Certainly not their oldest son.

Has a night ever been so long?

At least Ethan had the presence of mind to remember our purchases that were sitting in the trunk of our rental car. I’d been too put off by the unexpected appearance of our friends to remember them.  We put Benny on his leash for convenience sake and divided the lot among the four of us and proceeded to the house. Ethan carefully balanced everything on one arm so he could open the front door and admit the rest of us.

Maureen and Uncle Benny were still sitting in the living room as we entered the hallway. They immediately rose when they saw us. “Thank you so much,” Maureen said, “for getting everything. How much do I—”

Ethan and I both jumped up, weapons already drawn, looking for the source of the disturbance. Expecting to see a bullet hole of some kind in the step, I was surprised to find a rock lying there instead. Ethan saw it as well. His face flushed with anger as he holstered his gun and called out into the darkness, “Okay Joey. You can stop that shit right now and come on out where we can see you.”

Joey? Was he kidding? The next moment, Ethan’s brother slouched into view, wearing a smirk. That was the happiest I’d seen him since we’d arrived.

“Did I scare you two great big secret agents?” he taunted us.
