Liza visibly flinched at Ben’s words, as if she’d been struck. She pressed one hand against her bosom in a melodramatic expression. But her eyes told the true story, battling between barely repressed anger and shock.

Cassie spoke up, filling the void. “You have ten seconds to get off my property before I call the police,” she said. “I don’t think they’ll be impressed when you tell them you lived here ten years ago. If I have to, I’ll get a restraining order against you. Don’t think that I won’t.”

Less than a minute later, Vosh made a show of the collar’s remote as he entered the open cell, brandishing it like some ancient ward against evil. Arad placed a hand on Roku’s shoulder. He could feel the muscles wound and tense, ready for action under his touch. A warning yowl made Arad shiver. Roku had rolled to a crouch, poised on a hair trigger to take another shot at Vosh, restrained or not.

“Don’t. Please,” Arad whispered. The tension remained, but Roku eased back a bit. Now was not the time.

One eye on them, Vosh crouched down to check Pakko.

Tristan kept his senses open but there was no one to be seen. It seemed the prisoner had been telling the truth about how stupid Cheryl’s hired scum were. Once a section was checked they didn’t leave any guards, and no one bothered to recheck.

They turned into a hallway and Kitryn let out a snarl when a man appeared out of nowhere. He then let out a grunt when Tristan barrelled into his side knocking him out of the path of a mage ball just in time.

“Father.” Tristan’s anguished yell echoed through the hallway.

Kersin Nirthfell sneered.

They sat out on the patio and talked for a while, giving Ben and Cassie a chance to get to know one another. Ryan was very happy that his two favorite people in the world could finally meet. Afterward, they carried in their luggage and took it to the room they’d once shared. Cassie had made a few changes in the room in the short time Ryan had been gone, but they were good ones. She’d taken out the two single beds and replaced them with a full-sized bed with matching furniture. Ryan was just as surprised as Ben.

“This looks great,” he kept saying, and Cassie beamed.

“I was hoping you would like it,” she said with a knowing glance between the two

The Sycamore Psychopomp – Part 1 by J. Ray Lamb

Aaryn looked out the sliding glass door of his house and surveyed the backyard. There was a dilapidated aluminum shed and a large home propane tank on the west side with the garage and sycamore tree taking up most of the east side.

A small pile of dirt was all that remained from digging the foundations of the garage and from putting the basement under the house.

All in all, it was a great backyard to raise kids in except for the neighbors to the west. Growing up, it was the “Doc Hamman” place…

“I guess we’ll Uber to the airport,” Ben said. Aiden and Abby had taken the van for the trip to Atlanta, and Deacon and Keanu had already taken an Uber to the airport. The keys to Cameron’s sedan sat on an end table in the foyer, where he could easily find them.

“Sounds good,” Ryan agreed. He was happy that Ben seemed as delighted as he did at the prospect of going to St. Louis to stay with Cassie. He’d been apprehensive, considering Cassie lived in the same house where he and Ben had lived as boys, unsure what bad memories might linger from that time. But when Ben had finished using the Uber app, and Ryan mentioned his misgivings, Ben just shook his head.
